- never miss a show again

Rodrigo Y Gabriela

I admit that while I have listened to Rodrigo y Gabriella's CD voraciously and absolutely loved their set at Outlands last year, I did wonder a bit if an entire show of acoustic guitar might get a bit stale by the end of the night. Don't get me wrong, I was really excited to see them and bought tickets ages before the show, but still I did kind of wonder...I couldn't have been more wrong.

Rodrigo y Gabriella were just flat out incredible. I hesitate to describe their live presence, since it feels somewhat indescribable, but basically their creativity, passion, and guitar virtuosity is just jaw dropping. I don't think I have ever seen anyone's fingers move so fast. One piece that stands out from the show had Gabriella knocking out an amazing percussion with her knuckles on her guitar and Rodrigo playing a box drum. Another had Rodrigo using a beer bottle as a guitar slide, while not missing a beat of a crazy complex sequence.

If you read the liner notes of R y G's first CD they say rather emphatically that their music was influenced by many things but not flamenco. This kind of cracks me up because I just don't buy it, but the heavy metal and thrash influences - which they emphasize more - are totally apparent in their not-so-classical guitar playing.

Bottom line: if you get a chance, go see them. End of story. Seriously. Just go.
