Cat Power

Chan Marshall began performing under the stage name Cat Power after she dropped out of high school in Atlanta, Georgia and began touring with various bands with whom she was friends. At the time, Marshall saw music and touring as a social opportunity to take drugs and have fun with her friends. She had no idea where her musical career was about to take her.

When she moved in New York City in 1992 with a friend she had toured with, Marshall developed an interest in experimental and jazz musical styles. Once she began performing in New York, her popularity grew exponentially...and within two years, she was opening for Liz Phair (with Sonic Youth in the audience), playing her first record Dear Sir. Marshall decided to pull herself back from the limelight, but one night after a horrible nightmare she was inspired to write a few songs which were the beginnings of her fourth album, Moon Pix in 1998. Since then, Cat Power has put out numerous albums and has toured around the world.

Cat Power's music is minimalistic, highly emotional and personal and has a feminine roughness to it. Marshall grew up around her father's talent for blues music and piano playing, which can be heard in her own style. Though not bluesy but instead a bit folkish, Cat Power's acoustic guitar and piano is very distinct and intimate. Perfect for those pensive, more solitary moments.
