Not many folk artists begin their music career by closely and frequently collaborating with an all-female reggea group. Yet, original (sole) member of The Mount Goats, John Darnielle, started his just that way--with a group called The Casual Girls. Extremity and experiementation are no strangers to Darnielle, though, as evidenced by his sudden proclemation in 1996 that he will no longer use any profanity in his lyrics from that point on, in an effort to better allow listeners to hear the optistism in his songs.

The Mountain Goats were initially a one-man-act out of Claremont, CA, but eventually developed into a group of three to include bass and drums in addition to Darnielle's guitar and vocals. The Mountain Goats' style is a lo-fi, raw folk type that doesn't try to be pretty. They are perhaps best known for Darnielle's incredible knack for lyrics (recognized by The New York Times as the best non-hip hop lyricist in America). They named themselves after a Screamin' Jay Hawkins song, and Darnielle's lyrics are, too, full of cultural, musical, academic and personal references. The triad is still together today and released their most recent album, Transcendental Youth in 2012.
