Alt-rock-country band Wilco formed in Chicago in 1994 after the lead singer of their previous alternative country band, Uncle Tupelo, quit. Since their beginnings, Wilco has moved progressively away from their Uncle Tupelo country influences, towards a stronger focus on the rock and pop elements of their music.

Since their 1995 debut album, A.M., Wilco has experienced quite a ride in the music business. Their album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, which got them kicked off of Reprise Records after it had been recorded but not yet released, won Wilco (and Nonesuch Records, who accepted the album for release) tremendous success due to its electronics and sophisticated production.

Wilco has also expanded their sound by collaborating with various other artists. For instance, their work with Billy Bragg, though quite folky in nature, drifts apart from their typical approach with its generaly acoustic, Bob Dylan-esque sound. Another one of their well known collaborations was with The Minus Five. And so, if you're looking for a band that sticks to a single recipe, Wilco might not be the best choice for you. On the other hand, if you want to be surprised and impressed by a band that is constantly looking for evolution and development, check out Wilco...they might just do it for you.
